I used water and mountains to create an open and natural feeling location while still confining the players movement. The larger mountains were generated using Gaea while the navigable surfaces were sculpted with Unreal's landscape tool.
With such a dark and open environment, player guidance was very important. I achieved this through a combination of lights and sightlines. Distant VFX such as torches or fire spirits attract attention, while gaps in the tree coverage allow the player to see further in key locations.
